Healthcare construction for the NHS & private facilities

Building on live NHS and private healthcare sites: phased, compliant and planned around clinical services and patient safety.

Building on an operational NHS hospital or private healthcare site is a different discipline to a standard construction project. Clinical pathways stay open, infection-control boundaries shift with the programme, and the schedule is shaped by ward openings and closures, and the people most affected are your patients.

Cornerstone Group delivers hospital and healthcare construction across the NHS estate (from acute hospital refurbishment to mental health facilities, community diagnostic centres and primary care) planning and building within live environments to minimise disruption to the clinical services running alongside our work. Our utility services manage the critical connections (power, water, medical gas pipework and telecoms) that hospitals depend on at every stage.

Construction in live hospital environments

Construction in live hospital environments

We manage hospital construction on operational NHS sites with phased programmes built around your clinical needs. Before any work starts we establish infection-control zones, segregated site-access routes and agreed noise windows in coordination with your clinical team, building patient safety and care continuity into the programme from day one.

Compliance & governance

Compliance & governance

Hospital construction on an NHS estate works within a defined regulatory and governance framework. We build to the Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs) and Health Building Notes (HBNs) that govern NHS infrastructure, including building services and controls, with the Building Safety Act 2022 and Procurement Act 2023 built into project management at every stage.

New-build hospitals & estate refurbishment

New-build hospitals & estate refurbishment

Much NHS work involves the existing estate. We deliver both new-build hospital facilities and the refurbishment of occupied NHS and private hospitals across the UK. For greenfield builds and campus expansions, our site development services prepare the land, access roads and drainage first, and modern methods such as off-site manufacturing help us manage timelines, cut cost and reduce disruption to staff and patients.

Clinical engagement & coordination

Clinical engagement & coordination

Early engagement with frontline medical staff and estate specialists brings clinical expertise into a project when it has the most influence, before any design is finalised. We work closely with your teams throughout planning, design, installation and commissioning to protect the quality and safety of the finished clinical environment.

Resilient power & NHS net-zero

Resilient power & NHS net-zero

Hospitals cannot lose power, so resilient supplies and standby generation are designed in from the start. At the same time, with Trusts working toward Scope 1 net zero by 2040, every project carries a measurable carbon impact, so we build with whole-life carbon in mind, from off-site manufacturing to energy performance at handover, and increasingly deliver solar for hospitals to cut running costs while meeting targets.

FAQs

Healthcare construction, planned around patients.

Can't see your question here? Our team is happy to talk it through.

Can you work on a live hospital site?

Yes. We use phased programmes built around your clinical needs, and before any work starts we agree infection-control zones, segregated site-access routes and noise windows with your clinical team.

Which healthcare standards do you build to?

We build to the Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs) and Health Building Notes (HBNs) that govern NHS infrastructure, including building services and controls. The Building Safety Act 2022 and Procurement Act 2023 are built into our project management at every stage.

What healthcare settings do you work in?

We work with NHS Trusts and private clients across acute hospitals and emergency departments, mental health and secure care, community diagnostic centres, primary care and GP surgeries, community health hubs, and private hospitals and specialist clinics. That covers both new-build facilities and the refurbishment of occupied hospitals.

How do you involve our clinical teams?

We engage frontline medical staff and estate specialists early, before any design is finalised, and keep working closely with your teams through planning, design, installation and commissioning.

How do you handle power resilience and net zero?

Resilient supplies and standby generation are designed in from the start, and our utility services manage critical connections including medical gas pipework. We also build with whole-life carbon in mind and increasingly deliver solar for hospitals to help Trusts work toward their net zero targets.
