Commercial Solar EV Chargers

Cornerstone Group plans and installs commercial EV charging stations across the UK. We fully manage every stage of your project design and installation from the initial site survey to commissioning and handover including DNO connections, solar integration and load management.

What Commercial EV Charging Delivers for Your Business

  • Additional Revenue

Charge point operators can set pricing for public or semi-public charge points, creating an income from every charging session from day one.

  • Increased Footfall and Dwell Time

Listing your commercial EV chargers on networks like Zap-Map, PlugShare or OpenChargeMap makes you visible to drivers looking for somewhere to stop.

  • Stronger Sustainability Credentials

Commercial EV chargers are a measurable contribution to your net zero commitments. If you report against ESG frameworks or have supply chain sustainability requirements this infrastructure can help.

  • Improved Commercial Value

Commercial properties with EV charging infrastructure tend to get more interest from tenants and can even help you charge higher rents to improve commercial returns even more.

  • Fleet Cost Reduction

If you’ve got a fleet of company cars, charging them on-site (especially when using your own solar energy) reduces your vehicle operation costs compared to using public charge points.

  • Brand Visibility

You can brand commercial EV charging stations with your own logos and colours, helping turn profitable EV infrastructure into advertising for your business.

Types of Commercial EV Charger

Installing the right EV charger for your commercial premises depends on your site and available space as well as your expected users and how long vehicles are parked in your spaces.

We can advise on the right charger type, or combination of commercial EV chargers, during your site survey once we’ve got a better idea of your grid connection and available space.

Standard (AC)

These produce an output of between 3.7 to 7kW with an approximate charge time of 6-12 hours. They tend to be best for workplaces or if you can charge vehicles overnight.

Fast (AC)

Fast chargers are better suited to office sites or retail car parks, with 11-22 kW output and 2-4 hour charge times.

Rapid (DC)

These chargers are good for fleet depots, service stations or high-footfall retail car parks with an approximate charge time of 20-60 minutes.

Ultra-Rapid (DC)

Ultra-rapid commercial EV chargers can charge vehicles in about 10-20 minutes so are good for large fleet depots where vehicles need to be turned around quickly. You do need a dedicated transformer for this charger type.

Solar Integration and Battery Storage

Most commercial EV charging installations pull power from the grid. By combining EV chargers with Solar Carports and battery storage you can create your own electricity to power any vehicles.

It makes sense financially. Solar generation reduces your cost per kWh. Battery storage holds any surplus energy that isn’t used immediately for future charging. And if you consistently create more electricity than you need you can add another revenue stream by selling your excess back to the National Grid through the Smart Export Guarantee.

For load management, software is available that ensures your existing electrical infrastructure isn’t overloaded while vehicles are being charged and dynamic load balancing can distribute power across multiple chargers at once.

Commercial EV Charger Installation Process

  • Site Survey and Load Assessment

We’ll visit your site for a thorough survey that covers your existing electrical infrastructure, parking layout, grid connection capacity and cable routing options. We’ll also assess load capacity and model any future demand including scalability needs for phased rollouts or a growing fleet.

  • DNO Application and Grid Connection

If you’re installing rapid and ultra-rapid chargers (or even just most chargers) you’ll need to apply to your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to upgrade or confirm your grid connection. Lead times can be anything from a few weeks to months, so we’ll manage this process to keep everything moving.

  • System Design and Permitting

From our survey we’ll design your full system including charger placement, cable routing, load management configuration and any solar or battery integrations if needed. We’ll sort any permits or regulatory sign off needed too.

  • Installation

We route cables from your solar panels or grid supply to fuse boards and charging stations, mount your charge points and carry out all electrical work in compliance with BS7671 IET Wiring Regulations and all UK electrical safety standards.

  • Commissioning, Certification and Handover

We’ll fully commission and certify your EV charging system before handing it over to you. We test every charge point, your load management software and will issue all the compliance documents you need. If you’re applying for OVEZ grant funding for your project we’ll be available to help.

Fleet Charging Solutions

Dealing with a fleet of electric commercial vehicles is different than just a standard installation. You’ve got vehicle numbers, shift patterns, fast charging when vehicles are returned and your future growth plans to consider, which all affect your system design.

We design depot charging systems capable of handling overnight charging needs alongside your available grid capacity to ensure any vehicle is ready for the road without triggering demand charges or grid upgrades.

If there’s no capacity for overnight charging, we can install on-site solar PV and battery storage to supplement your electricity supply to reduce your costs and demand on grid supply. You can adapt your charging schedules to use off-peak windows automatically to reduce costs even further.

Commercial EV Charging Costs and Government Grants

The cost of a commercial EV charging installation depends on the number and type of chargers you want as well as your site conditions, cable run distances and whether any DNO work or solar or battery integration is needed. We can provide more accurate costs during your initial consultation.

But there are a number of Government grants available that could help with the initial capital investment.

Workplace Charging Scheme

The WCS runs until 2027 and gives you funding of up to £350 per socket (capped at 40 sockets per applicant) to buy and install EV charge points at workplaces. Your charge points need to be installed by an OZEV-approved installer to qualify.

Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Grant

This provides support for the installation of rapid and higher-powered charge points at eligible locations like car parks, supermarkets and publicly accessible sites. How much you qualify for will depend on your installation type.

Choosing the right commercial EV charging installation starts with a comprehensive site assessment. We come and assess your current infrastructure, parking layout and any future needs to give you a full recommendation on your project and a realistic quote.

A standard installation can usually be completed within a week with no complex requirements or complications. If you need additional work like DNO applications, adapting your existing electrical infrastructure or integrating solar or battery storage the programme will take longer.

Load management controls how power is distributed across your charge points and prevents your site from pulling more electricity than your grid connection lets you. If you’re installing more than two charge points or have a large fleet of vehicles you’ll likely need load management.

In most cases yes, it’s possible to relocate your charge points, providing you move to another suitable location with the required electrical works. Difficulties can come because wall-mounted chargers and cable routes and fuse boards are fixed.

We design these systems around your current and predicted vehicle numbers, shift patterns and overnight charging needs to make sure all your vehicles are ready when you need them without risking additional grid costs.
