Education Construction

Cornerstone Group has delivered education construction projects for schools, colleges and universities across the North West and UK.

Working with academy trusts, local authorities and higher education estates teams we understand what makes education projects distinct. Academic year deadlines. Construction around live, occupied sites. Design decisions shaped by curriculum and safeguarding requirements. And often deadlines that can’t be moved.

Whether you’re planning new school buildings, refurbishing existing schools or developing higher education facilities, we manage every phase in-house from design, planning, construction and interior finishing. Our civil engineering capability covers the groundworks, drainage, and infrastructure connections that underpin every education build we deliver.

The education settings we build

Our expertise spans the full range of educational institutions, from new early years facilities to existing schools and university campus developments.

Primary and secondary schools

We deliver new-build and refurbishment projects for primary and secondary school buildings, including extensions, specialist teaching spaces and sports facilities.

Academy schools and free schools

We work closely with academy trusts and local authorities on new build academy schools and refurbishment programmes aligned to DfE requirements.

SEND and SEN schools

Design for special educational needs requires a distinct approach to create the right learning environment. Sensory considerations, safeguarding, staff requirements and spatial needs of SEND learners shape all the decisions we make. We treat SEND provision as a specialism construction requirement.

Further and higher education sector

Our track record includes further education colleges, academies, university buildings and student accommodation. We understand the complexity of building within a working campus environment and the programme demands that come with it.

Delivery built around your school schedule

Construction on a live school site has obligations that empty commercial plots don’t. Lessons are going on. Students and teaching staff are present. Visitors continue to come in. And governors and parents expect to be kept informed on your progress.

Our programme approach is built around the academic year. Phased construction schedules, defined hoarding strategies, and noise management windows keep disruption to a minimum. We’ll agree all communication with your school leadership and stakeholders so everyone is kept informed at all times.

This early contractor involvement means programme risks and cost pressures are figured out before they delay your project. Our project managers work closely with your estate managers and client project managers from the beginning, ensuring planning decisions are made with accurate cost and programme details.

Why choose Cornerstone Group?

End to end delivery

From architectural design and planning through to construction, interior finishing and handover, we manage every phase of your education project. One team, one point of contact.

Built to last

Education buildings face heavy use daily. We specify materials with that in mind to balance durability with creating the welcoming atmosphere your staff and students needs. Our structural engineering team reviews every frame and load-bearing element to ensure the building performs safely under those demands for decades.

Spaces that reflect your institution

Effective school design expresses the ethos of your school. It creates an environment that supports your curriculum and student learning. And it shows off your values. We take the time to understand what makes your school or college distinctive before a single design decision is made.

Based in the North West

With offices in Manchester and Preston we’re well placed to support education projects across the region and around the UK. That means responsive site management and faster mobilisation. You have a team that understands the local authority and Trust environment in your area.

Sustainability and energy efficiency

The design decisions made during an educational setting construction project affect energy running costs for decades. We incorporate energy efficiency measures as standard, including high-performance insulation, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, solar PV, renewable energy systems and low embodied carbon materials. As specialist commercial roofing contractors, we ensure the building envelope is watertight and thermally efficient before any solar or insulation installation begins.

Our approach aligns with the DfE sustainability and Climate Change Strategy. The result is school buildings that are cheaper to run, better for the environment, promote better learning and make things more comfortable for students and teachers throughout the academic year.
